The release of the Google Pixel Buds A-Series is the first time Google has released a hardware device that is entirely unique to the Pixel. There are some similarities to the Pixel smartphones in terms of industrial design, but the Pixel Buds have a unique design that is unlike anything Google has released before. A few weeks ago I ordered a pair of the Google Pixel Buds wireless headphones with the intention of reviewing them. I’ve used wireless earbuds before, but they have all been wired earbuds that have a wireless connection to a smartphone.

SIze & Comfort
Airpods (the new Apple earbuds) get around the on-ear design problem by hanging the battery and receivers from a weird little “arm” that hangs down from the ear. Other companies could benefit from this, but instead they build outwardly, leading to these wide profiles, which don’t balance properl.
There are lots of headphones out there that are bulky and awkward. They can be a real pain to put in, especially if you have small ears. Plus they won’t stay in place if you’re doing something more strenuous, like running or biking. With these problems we were determined to make a better headphone that was comfortable and easy to use.
Over the past two years, I have tried more than 60 pairs of wireless earbuds, and while more than half of them were decent-sounding, around 50% sounded absolutely horrendous. The bass is weak and often thin, making for a drawn-out sound that lacks definition. I play bass in my free time and even I could hear deficiencies when demoing these bad products.
The other fault of earphones I see is a lack of range. Some earphones do not go up to such high volumes; this can prove dissatisfying when I want to listen more than my usual levels – which is often the case as most people listen to music at a higher volume level than they realize. Doing this day in, day out can drag your battery down and cause damage over time, which is why it’s important to run your earphones at less than 100% volume if you are listening via batteries.
Wireless earbuds have always had a tricky situation regarding battery life. You’re pumping a lot of power into such a small device and still keeping it lightweight enough to sit comfortably in your ears without causing you any discomfort. They can run up to 8 hours per charge, with portable playback coming from the charging cases that act as backup batteries, which is pretty decent for most situations – but long-haul flights or extended camping trips might be enough to drain all that juice!
The definition of expensive earbuds is subjective to people who talk about it. But I find the best earbuds to be the ones that have a great sound quality and are very comfortable in my ears, which let me listen to music whenever and wherever I want.
